Zhuge Jun

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Zhuge Jun, the youngest of the three Zhuge brothers, appears briefly in the account of Xuande’s pursuit of Zhuge Liang. His importance lies in that encounter: when Xuande reaches the brothers’ simple hut, Zhuge Jun is mistaken for the strategist he has come to find, and the visit ends instead with a letter promising another attempt.

Identity and Family

Zhuge Jun is identified as the youngest brother of Zhuge Jin and Zhuge Liang, also known as Kong Ming. Zhuge Jin, the eldest, is serving Sun Quan; Zhuge Liang is the middle brother. The account gives no further personal history or political role for Zhuge Jun.

The Visit to the Thatched Cottage

After Xuande has been urged to seek Zhuge Liang’s help, he rides to the hut despite terrible weather. He is delighted to hear that the master is at home, only to discover that the person reading in the room is Zhuge Jun, not Zhuge Liang. The mistaken expectation turns the visit into another delay in Xuande’s effort to recruit the strategist.

Zhang Fei is impatient and urges Xuande to return to the city. Before leaving, however, Xuande writes Zhuge Liang a courteous letter explaining that he has twice tried to meet him and hopes for his assistance in restoring the honour of the House of Han. He says he will make one more attempt. Zhuge Jun’s appearance therefore marks a pause, not a resolution, in the developing relationship between Xuande and Zhuge Liang.

Narrative Role

The scene distinguishes the three brothers through their ages and affiliations while keeping Zhuge Jun’s own role modest. His presence supplies the concrete reason Xuande’s visit does not achieve its purpose, and the contrast between the expected master and the younger brother heightens the anticipation of a later meeting. Beyond this episode, the account does not describe Zhuge Jun’s actions or fate.
